1. Some of my employees are bilingual. Is there a reason I shouldn't use them to meet our translation needs?

Actually, there are several reasons we don't recommend this. Any time your employee spends translating is time not spent doing his or her regular job. Are you taking this into account in performance evaluations? Is this really the best use of your employee?
Also, translation is a full-time job, which requires years of training and experience. Yet, even professional translators occasionally make mistakes. How do you know that your employee's translation is accurate? Who will edit/proofread their work? If you are working with a translation company, the translation process involves translators, editors, proofreaders and project coordinators.

2. Is it a good idea to have my employee edit/proofread your translation?

That is up to you. However, we do have a word of caution. An employee who is asked to edit/proofread a translation may not be qualified and may make changes that are wrong. There is also the issue of stylistic versus linguistic differences. Lastly, keep in mind that your employee is likely to feel obliged "to find something," lest you think less of their abilities, even if there is nothing to find.

3. Should we use an individual translator or a translation company?

There are some instances in which an individual translator would be best for the job; particularly small, low-priority, low risk jobs. But how will you determine which translator to use? How will you find the right person for the job, rather than whoever is handy? Translator selection is a time-consuming job. Chances are that your time is limited.
Also, how will you know if the translator has made any mistakes? When you use a translation company, you have the benefit of the expertise of many professionals, including translators, editors, proofreaders and project coordinators.
